Coleridge's Variety: Bicentenary Studies by John Beer (ed.) (First Edition)
Coleridge remains an elusive figure in English literary and cultural history, attractive, self-distancing, sympathetic and baffling by turns. To commemorate the bicentenary of his birth a number of scholars, well known in their respective fields, were invited to lecture on his work at Cambridge. The resulting studies, along with one or two based on lectures given elsewhere, present an unusually comprehensive picture of his mind and imagination.
Coleridge's psychological theories, his interest in contemporary science, his extraordinary powers of self-expression in impromptu letters, his delight in the use and possibilities language, his contributions to philosophy, are each examined by individual contributors.
The strengths and weaknesses of his personality are discussed sympathetically and at length by Thomas McFarland, while George Whalley and M. H. Abrams undertake more general accounts of his subtle poetic sensibility and his place in the tradition of Romantic thought. In a brief opening essay L. C. Knights draws attention to some seminal features of Coleridge's criticism.
