The Elephant Vanishes by Haruki Murakami

When a man's favourite elephant vanishes, the balance of his whole life is subtly upset; a couple's midnight hunger pangs drive them to hold up a McDonald's; a woman finds she is irresistible to a small green monster that burrows through her front garden, an insomniac wife wakes up to a twilight world of semi-consciousness in which anything seems possible -even death.

In every one of the stories that make up The Elephant Vanishes, Murakami makes a determined assault on the normal. He has a deadpan genius for dislocating realities to uncover the surreal in the everyday, the extraordinary in the ordinary.

Condition: Acceptable

A vintage book with obvious wear. Has some damage to the cover, including creasing and scuff marks along the edges, and a previous owner has written their name, using a black pen, at the top of the inside of the front cover, but integrity still intact. There is a faint stain on the first page (looks like coffee) that has seeped through, but gets smaller over the next 35 pages and disappears. There is also some wrinkling caused by the spillage, and some obvious creasing. No writing in margins, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no missing pages or anything that would compromise the legibility or understanding of the text. A used and worn, but still solid and readable copy.
