Religion and Morality: A Collection of Essays (edited) by Gene Outka, & John P. Reeder, Jr.
The question of how religion and morality are related has excited a lot of debate from the ancient times to the present. Socrates posed the basic question in Plato's Euthyphro: "Is what is holy holy because the gods approve it or do they approve it because it is holy?"
This collection of original essays constitutes a wide-ranging debate between philosophers, students of the ethics of Judaism and Christianity, and anthropologists, on the relation of religion to morality. The major question addressed throughout the volume is whether morality is logically or epistemologically dependent on religion. In addition, some of the contributors discuss definitions of religion and morality, beliefs about the influence of God on the moral agent, and convictions which give a "point" to moral endeavour.
