One Hundred Years of Trotting (1877-1977) by Greg Brown (First Edition)

Over the decades, trotting continually has boasted about its diverse and certainly incongruous collection of adherents - Knights, housewives, boxers, entertainers, a kaleidoscopic flock of professions, occupations and tradesmen, especially butchers, and even clerics. Greg Brown typifies them.

Spanning one hundred years, he writes about the trials and tribulations of pioneering administrators and breeders; political intrigues in all kinds of events; the humour of ring-ins and skullduggery; the evolution of the tote; the denouement of two year old racing; colourful equine and human personalities; the twenty five year struggle for night trotting; the feats of champions from Huon to Hondo; the ever changing handicapping and racing conditions.

Discussing the State Trotting Authority, the straight style of the author is well illustrated by his statement that 'in seventy five years, trotting has come from an era when nobody wanted to control the sport to an epoch when everybody does'.

Greg Brown does all this in an orderly chronological but interesting sequence giving the book that easy put down - take up convenience.
