Hal Porter: Man of Many Parts by Mary Lord (First Edition)
Hal Porter: Man of Many Parts is the long-awaited biography of a major Australian literary talent.
He recorded and vivified the sights, sounds, smells, the minutiae of the daily life of ordinary people in this country over the seventy-odd years of his life in a way no historian or sociologist could ever do. He captured very exactly Australia as it was, and Australians as they were, writing with superbly polished wit and, quite often, with lively humour. His contribution to our cultural heritage cannot be measured. Nor can the price he paid in his personal life to produce these treasures.
Mary Lord began work on this book on Porter's suggestion, before he died. She has had full access to his papers and has written an account of a writer and his times which is worthy of his stature.
