Dad & Dave by Steele Rudd

Few writers become something of a legend in their own lifetimes; but that, in effect, is what happened to Steele Rudd. More - it happened also to the chief characters of his numerous Selection stories, Dad and Dave Rudd, in particular.

This volume includes the complete text of the most famous Selection stories, first published in the Bulletin and later in the two collections On Our Selection (1899) and Our New Selection (1903). The illustrations to these original editions, by such artists as Norman Lindsay, Lionel Lindsay, A. J. Fischer and others, were felt to be so much a part of the stories that a number of these have also been included.

The Rudds proved to be the nearest thing we have ever had in literature to the typical Australian pioneer farming family - the 'cocky farmer' personified. And in spite of being set in days long before the coming of the T-model Ford, let alone the tractor, Rudd's Selection stories have never dated. They hold the secret of what makes for literary durability - humour, unforgettable characterisation, and above all, a warm and timeless humanity.
