Song of the Pen: Complete Works 1901-1941 by A. B. 'Banjo' Paterson
Song of the Pen presents Paterson's literary works of the period 1901-1941. During these years he produced a significant amount of poetry and many prose works. Amongst the poetry, readers will be pleased to find more of Saltbush Bill and the favourites, 'In the Stable', The Old Timer's Steeplechase' and 'Any Other Time'. Previously unpublished work includes, The Cook's Dog, a novel set in the Australian bush; the treatise, Racehorses and Racing, a layman's guide to the turf; Constantine the Great, a delightful short story for children; and the talks on a wide-selection of topics that Paterson gave for wireless and live audiences during the 1930's.
This is a companion volume to Singer of the Bush, which contains Paterson's works of the period, 1885-1900. In both volumes, the works are presented in chronological order, according to date of publication, except where publication was delayed. In these cases they are included according to date of writing. This presentation provides an overview of Paterson's work and allows the reader to see the changes and development in the writer's themes and styles.
Paterson's writings have been meticulously researched by the author's grand-daughters, and with the exception of his first two collections of verse, where he was personally involved in the editing, all works are printed in their original form, and date and place of first publication are given for each.
Many of the original line illustrations of Paterson's poems and prose pieces are reproduced, as well as works from his own art collection, original manuscripts, and family memorabilia. In its style of presentation and choice of illustrations, this work is quite unlike other complete literary works. The author's grand-daughters bring a warmth and commitment to the collection, and their first-hand knowledge of the writer provides fresh insights into both the familiar verses and the lesser-known works, while the original illustrations and other illustrative material enhance the written word and subtly evoke the life and times of Banjo Paterson.

A vintage book that has been read but is in good condition. Very minimal damage to the cover including a tiny tear (half a cm) on the top of the spine, but no other scuff marks, holes or tears. This edition not released with a dust jacket. The majority of pages are undamaged with no creasing or tearing, no pencil underlining of text, no highlighting of text and no writing in margins. There are tiny specks of discolouring bordering some pages, most of which is only visible on the book's block when book is shut (see pics.) No missing pages.
